Biography

Devonté Hynes is an English-American musician, singer, songwriter, composer, producer and filmmaker known for his work under the stage name Blood Orange. His career spans indie rock, alternative R&B, electronic music, film scoring and contemporary music production.

Early Life

Devonté Hynes was born on 23 December 1985 in Houston, Texas, USA, and was raised in England. He developed an interest in music during his youth and became involved in London's independent music scene.

He first gained wider attention as a member of the British dance-punk band Test Icicles, where he performed alongside Rory Attwell and Sam Mehran. The group released the album For Screening Purposes Only in 2005 before eventually disbanding.

Music Career

After Test Icicles, Hynes began developing his own sound as a solo artist. He initially recorded under the name Lightspeed Champion, releasing the album Falling Off the Lavender Bridge in 2008.

He later adopted the name Blood Orange, under which he established his best-known musical identity. His albums combine elements of R&B, soul, funk, pop, jazz and electronic music.

Among his notable Blood Orange releases are Coastal Grooves (2011), Cupid Deluxe (2013), Freetown Sound (2016), Negro Swan (2018) and Angel's Pulse (2019).
