Lane began acting professionally as a child. She made her film debut in A Little Romance (1979), starring opposite Laurence Olivier and Thelonious Bernard. Her performance attracted attention, and she quickly became one of the promising young actresses of her generation.

During the 1980s, she appeared in several notable films, including The Outsiders (1983), Rumble Fish (1983), Streets of Fire (1984), and Cotton Club (1984). These films established her as a versatile performer capable of handling dramatic and emotionally demanding roles.
