Dora Romano
Biography
Dora Romano is an Italian actress and singer known for her extensive work in theatre, film, television, and musical productions. Born near Naples, Italy, she graduated in sociology in 1979 before studying acting at the Bottega Teatrale di Firenze, the acting school founded by Vittorio Gassman, where she graduated in 1980.
Romano received theatrical training from renowned teachers and practitioners, including Jerzy Grotowski, Elizabeth Kemp, Dominic De Fazio, and Ivana Chubbuck, working in both Italy and the United States. Her professional stage debut came under director Otomar Krejča in Aeschylus' The Suppliants at the Greek Theatre of Syracuse. She subsequently spent two years performing with the theatre company of acclaimed Italian playwright and actor Eduardo De Filippo.
Throughout her theatre career, Romano appeared in works by major playwrights including Goldoni, Molière, Euripides, Plautus, D'Annunzio, Anouilh, Shakespeare, Goethe, and Bertolt Brecht. In 1991, director Ermanno Olmi cast her as Mrs. Gibbs in Our Town.
Romano has also demonstrated her versatility as a singer, appearing in musicals such as She Loves Me, Gian Burrasca, Sister Act, Titanic, Il Marchese del Grillo, and Mary Poppins. Her extensive stage experience eventually led to prominent screen roles, making her a respected and versatile figure in Italian performing arts.
