Biography

Doris Lessing (1919–2013) was a British novelist, short story writer, and poet, celebrated for her fearless exploration of social, political, and psychological themes. Born in Kermanshah, Persia (now Iran) and raised in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), her early experiences in colonial Africa deeply influenced her work, particularly her insights into race, class, and gender.

Lessing gained recognition with novels such as The Grass Is Singing (1950), which examines racial tensions and societal expectations, and The Golden Notebook (1962), a groundbreaking exploration of women’s lives, politics, and personal identity. She also wrote science fiction and short stories, showcasing her versatility and intellectual curiosity.

In 2007, Lessing was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for her contribution to modern fiction, and her work remains influential for its psychological depth, social critique, and literary innovation.
