Eddie Albert

Biography

Eddie Albert (April 22, 1906 – May 26, 2005) was an American actor, singer, producer, and activist whose career spanned more than six decades. Born Edward Albert Heimberger in Rock Island, Illinois, he studied at the University of Minnesota before working in radio, theater, and even as a circus trapeze performer. He eventually moved into films and made his screen debut in Brother Rat (1938).

Albert became a familiar character actor in Hollywood, often portraying friendly, intelligent, and dependable men, although he also demonstrated a talent for playing villains and morally complicated characters. His notable films included Roman Holiday (1953), Oklahoma! (1955), The Teahouse of the August Moon (1956), Attack (1956), Captain Newman, M.D. (1963), The Longest Day (1962), The Longest Yard (1974), and The Heartbreak Kid (1972).

His performance as photographer Irving Radovich in Roman Holiday earned him his first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Nearly two decades later, he received a second Oscar nomination for playing the father of Cybill Shepherd's character in The Heartbreak Kid.

Albert achieved his greatest television fame as Oliver Wendell Douglas, the city lawyer who dreams of becoming a farmer, in the popular sitcom Green Acres (1965–1971). He later starred as Frank MacBride in the crime drama Switch and appeared in numerous other television programs and films.

During World War II, Albert served in the U.S. military and was awarded the Bronze Star for his service. He was also known for his environmental activism and interest in organic gardening and conservation.

Eddie Albert died of pneumonia on May 26, 2005, at his home in Pacific Palisades, California, at the age of 99. He remains remembered for his versatility across film, television, theater, and radio, particularly for his beloved role in Green Acres.
