Ed Ruscha

Biography

Ed Ruscha (born 1937) is an American painter, printmaker, photographer and filmmaker, and an important figure in Pop Art and contemporary American art. Born on December 16, 1937, in Omaha, Nebraska, he grew up in Oklahoma City and moved to Los Angeles in 1956 to study at the Chouinard Art Institute.

Ruscha became known for incorporating words, phrases, advertisements and everyday American imagery into his paintings. His background in commercial art and printing strongly influenced his distinctive visual style.

He also produced influential artists' books, including Twentysix Gasoline Stations (1963), and created photographs, prints and drawings exploring Los Angeles and American popular culture.

Ruscha's work has been exhibited internationally and is held in major museums worldwide. He is regarded as one of the most influential American artists of the postwar period, particularly for his innovative use of language, typography and popular imagery.
