Biography
Edward Dmytryk was a Canadian-American film director and editor, best known for his work in Hollywood during the 1940s and 1950s. Born on September 4, 1908, in Grand Forks, British Columbia, Canada, he began his career as a film editor before moving into directing.
Dmytryk directed a wide range of films, including Murder, My Sweet (1944), Crossfire (1947), The Caine Mutiny (1954), The Young Lions (1958), and The Carpetbaggers (1964). Crossfire, a film about anti-Semitism and murder, received several Academy Award nominations.
His career was significantly affected by the Hollywood blacklist. He was one of the Hollywood Ten, was imprisoned for contempt of Congress after refusing to answer questions about alleged Communist Party membership, and later cooperated with the House Un-American Activities Committee.
Edward Dmytryk continued directing films for several decades before retiring from filmmaking. He died on July 1, 1999, in Encino, California, at the age of 90.
