Edward Saxon

Biography

Edward Bradley Saxon is an American film and television producer best known for his long collaboration with director Jonathan Demme and for producing the Academy Award-winning film The Silence of the Lambs. He was born on November 17, 1956, in St. Louis, Missouri.

Early Life and Education

Saxon grew up in St. Louis and attended McGill University, where he became involved in theater and founded the Tuesday Night Café Theatre. He later studied producing at the USC Peter Stark Producing Program, graduating from the University of Southern California's film program in 1984.

Career

Saxon began his professional career in the entertainment industry and eventually became a producing partner of director Jonathan Demme. Their collaboration produced several notable films, including Something Wild (1986), Married to the Mob (1988), Miami Blues (1990), The Silence of the Lambs (1991), Philadelphia (1993), and Beloved (1998).

His most celebrated achievement came with The Silence of the Lambs (1991). Saxon produced the psychological thriller, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture. The film famously swept the five major Oscar categories—Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, and Adapted Screenplay.

Later Producing Work

After his partnership with Demme ended, Saxon continued producing films with a range of prominent filmmakers. His later credits include Devil in a Blue Dress (1995), That Thing You Do! (1996), Ulee's Gold (1997), Adaptation (2002), The Truth About Charlie (2002), Fast Food Nation (2006), Away We Go (2009), Our Family Wedding (2010), and Elsa & Fred (2014).

He also worked in television, serving as a co-executive producer on series including Enlightened and Ray Donovan.

Academic and Industry Work

Saxon has remained active in film education. He became the endowed chair of the Peter Stark Producing Program at USC's School of Cinematic Arts and has taught and mentored aspiring filmmakers. He has also served as a mentor for organizations including the Sundance Institute and the Producers Guild.

Acting Appearances

Although primarily a producer, Saxon has occasionally appeared on screen. He made a memorable cameo in The Silence of the Lambs as Benjamin Raspail's head in a jar. He also appeared in Miami Blues, The Ref, and Beloved.
