Biography
Eiji Okada was a Japanese actor known for his work in Japanese cinema and international productions. He was born on June 13, 1920, in Chiyoda, Tokyo, Japan.
Okada gained international recognition for his performance as a Japanese architect in Hiroshima Mon Amour (1959), directed by Alain Resnais. The film became a landmark of French New Wave and international art cinema.
He also appeared in films such as Woman of the Lake (1966), The Ugly American (1963), The Emperor and a General (1967), and The Yakuza (1974). His performances often bridged Japanese and Western film industries.
Beyond cinema, Okada worked extensively in Japanese television and theatre. He remained active as an actor for several decades.
Eiji Okada died on September 14, 1995, in Tokyo, Japan, at the age of 75. He is particularly remembered internationally for Hiroshima Mon Amour and for helping bring Japanese acting to a global audience.
