Emraan Hashmi
Biography
Emraan Anwar Hashmi, born on 24 March 1979, is a prominent Indian actor best known for his work in Hindi cinema. He made his acting debut with the crime thriller Footpath (2003) and soon rose to fame through films such as Murder (2004), Kalyug (2005), and Gangster (2006). His performance in the action drama Awarapan (2007) further strengthened his reputation as a talented performer. Over the years, Hashmi has earned several Filmfare Award nominations for his work.
Before stepping in front of the camera, Hashmi began his film career as an assistant director on the horror film Raaz (2002). He later emerged as one of Bollywood’s leading actors, especially in the romantic thriller genre. Films like Zeher (2005), Aashiq Banaya Aapne (2005), Aksar (2006), and Gangster (2006) played a major role in establishing his popularity and creating a strong fan following.
Hashmi continued his successful run with several critically and commercially acclaimed films, including Jannat (2008), Raaz: The Mystery Continues (2009), Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai (2010), The Dirty Picture (2011), Murder 2 (2011), Shanghai (2012), Jannat 2 (2012), Raaz 3 (2012), and Ek Thi Daayan (2013). His performances often combined emotional depth with intense screen presence, making him a distinctive figure in contemporary Hindi cinema.
On the personal front, Emraan Hashmi married Parveen Shahani in December 2006 after being in a relationship for more than six years. The couple welcomed their son, Ayaan Hashmi, on 3 February 2010. In 2014, Ayaan was diagnosed with first-stage cancer, a difficult period that deeply affected the family. After years of treatment and recovery, Ayaan was declared cancer-free in January 2019.
Hashmi comes from a multicultural background, with a Muslim father and a Christian mother, but he was raised as a Muslim and has spoken openly about being a firm believer in God. In March 2016, he suffered a personal loss when his mother, Maherrah Hashmi, passed away. Despite the tragedy, he returned to the sets of his film Azhar shortly afterward, choosing to remain engaged with work.
In 2016, Hashmi shared his family’s emotional journey through his autobiographical book The Kiss of Life, which documented his son’s battle with cancer and highlighted themes of hope, courage, and resilience. Beyond his cinematic achievements, the book revealed a personal and compassionate side of the actor, further strengthening his connection with audiences.
