Fairfield Porter

Biography

Fairfield Porter (1907–1975) was an American painter and art critic known for his representational paintings, landscapes, portraits and domestic scenes. He was born on June 10, 1907, in Winnetka, Illinois, into a family with strong artistic and literary interests.

Porter studied fine art at Harvard University and later attended the Art Students League in New York, where he studied with Thomas Hart Benton and Boardman Robinson. His work was influenced by European painters such as Pierre Bonnard and Édouard Vuillard, as well as contemporary artists including Willem de Kooning.

Unlike many artists of his generation, Porter continued painting in a figurative and realist style during the rise of Abstract Expressionism. He mainly painted family members, friends, interiors and landscapes around Southampton, New York, and Great Spruce Head Island, Maine.

Alongside painting, Porter had an important career as an art critic, writing for publications including ARTnews and The Nation. He became respected for his independent and thoughtful views on modern American art.

Porter received increasing recognition during the 1950s and 1960s, with exhibitions at major museums and galleries. His first museum retrospective was held at the Cleveland Museum of Art in 1966, and he represented the United States at the 1968 Venice Biennale.

Fairfield Porter died on September 18, 1975, in Southampton, New York, aged 68. He remains an important figure in American figurative painting and art criticism, remembered for finding beauty and significance in ordinary people, places and everyday life.
