Faith Ringgold

Biography

Faith Ringgold (1930–2024) was an American artist, author, educator and activist best known for her painted story quilts. Born on October 8, 1930, in Harlem, New York City, she studied art at the City College of New York and later earned both bachelor's and master's degrees.

Ringgold began gaining attention in the 1960s with her American People series, which addressed racism, civil rights and social inequality. She later explored feminism, African American culture and political issues through paintings, posters, sculptures and performances.

She became especially famous for her story quilts, which combined painted images, textiles and written narratives. Her best-known work, Tar Beach, was later adapted into an award-winning children's book. She also wrote and illustrated numerous other books.

Alongside her artistic career, Ringgold was an influential activist and educator. She taught at the University of California, San Diego, from 1984 to 2002 and received numerous awards and honorary degrees.

Faith Ringgold died on April 13, 2024, in Englewood, New Jersey, at the age of 93. She remains an influential figure in American art, remembered for combining storytelling, history, activism and textile traditions in her work.
