Biography

Faredoon A. Irani was an acclaimed Indian cinematographer who made significant contributions to Hindi cinema from the 1930s through the 1970s. Renowned for his technical excellence and visual storytelling, he was one of the leading cinematographers of his era and is best remembered for his long association with filmmaker Mehboob Khan.

Early Career

Faredoon A. Irani began his career as a cinematographer in the 1930s. His first major assignment was Judgement of Allah (1935), which marked the directorial debut of Mehboob Khan. This collaboration developed into a long-standing partnership, with Irani photographing many of Mehboob Khan's most celebrated films.

Career

Throughout his career, Irani served as the cinematographer for several landmark Hindi films, including Anmol Ghadi (1946), Andaz (1949), Aan (1952), Amar (1954), and Mother India (1957). Aan is widely recognized as India's first Technicolor film, while Mother India became one of the most iconic films in Indian cinema and earned international recognition.

Apart from his work with Mehboob Khan, Irani also photographed several other successful Hindi films. His outstanding cinematography in Mother India (1957) and Duniya (1968) earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Cinematography on two occasions.

Professional Contributions

Faredoon A. Irani played an important role in the Indian film industry's technical community. On 2 August 1953, he presided over the meeting in Mumbai that led to the formation of the Western India Cinematographers' Association (WICA), an organization established to represent and support cinematographers.
