Biography

Forrest Bess (1911–1977) was an American painter whose deeply personal and symbolic work occupies a unique place in 20th-century art. Born in Bay City, Texas, Bess grew up in relative isolation along the Gulf Coast, an environment that profoundly influenced both his art and worldview. Largely self-taught, he developed a highly individual style rooted in intuition, mythology, and spiritual exploration rather than formal artistic traditions.

Bess’s career began in earnest in the late 1940s when his small, abstract paintings attracted the attention of prominent artists and critics, including Willem de Kooning and Meyer Schapiro. Although often associated with Abstract Expressionism due to his time period, Bess rejected the movement’s emphasis on gesture and scale. Instead, he focused on compact compositions featuring simplified shapes, bold colors, and recurring symbols that he believed represented universal truths and psychological states.

Central to Bess’s work was his belief that art could reveal hidden aspects of human consciousness. He drew inspiration from Jungian psychology, alchemy, mythology, and indigenous cultures, viewing his paintings as visual expressions of inner visions rather than external reality. Despite periods of recognition, Bess lived much of his life in poverty and obscurity, working as a commercial fisherman to support himself.
