Biography

Frances Fisher (born May 11, 1952) is an American actress known for her extensive work in film, television, and theatre. Born in Milford-on-Sea, Hampshire, England, she was raised in Texas and began her acting career on stage before moving into television and film.

Fisher gained early recognition through television roles, including appearances in The Edge of Night, Guiding Light, and Strange Voices. She later became widely known for portraying strong and dramatic characters in both independent and major Hollywood productions.

Her notable film credits include Unforgiven (1992), Titanic (1997), House of Sand and Fog (2003), Laws of Attraction (2004), The Kingdom (2007), In the Valley of Elah (2007), and Holmes & Watson (2018). In James Cameron's Titanic, she played Ruth DeWitt Bukater, the socially ambitious mother of Rose, portrayed by Kate Winslet.

Fisher has also enjoyed a substantial television career, appearing in series such as Eureka, Resurrection, The Sinner, Watchmen, The Lincoln Lawyer, and The Rookie. She has frequently taken roles in historical dramas, crime stories, and character-driven productions.

In 2024, Fisher appeared in Rust, directed by Joel Souza, playing Harriet. The Western starred Alec Baldwin and Patrick Scott McDermott and was completed after production was halted following the fatal on-set shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins in 2021.
