Fred Roos

Biography

Fred Roos was an American film producer, casting director, and longtime Hollywood collaborator best known for his work with Francis Ford Coppola and for helping launch the careers of major actors. He was born on May 22, 1934, in Santa Monica, California, and died on May 18, 2024, in Los Angeles, California.

Career

Roos began working in Hollywood as a casting director during the 1960s. He became particularly respected for his ability to recognize emerging talent and was involved in casting several influential films.

He served as casting director on Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather (1972) and The Conversation (1974). His casting work contributed to the discovery and advancement of performers who later became major stars.

Roos later moved into producing and became a key collaborator within Coppola's filmmaking circle. His producing credits include The Black Stallion (1979), The Outsiders (1983), The Cotton Club (1984), Peggy Sue Got Married (1986), Lost in Translation (2003), Marie Antoinette (2006), and Somewhere (2010).

Work with Sofia Coppola

Roos was a longtime producer on the films of Sofia Coppola. He produced several of her acclaimed projects, including Lost in Translation, Marie Antoinette, Somewhere, The Bling Ring (2013), The Beguiled (2017), and On the Rocks (2020).

He was also associated with Paris Can Wait (2016), directed by Eleanor Coppola, which follows a married woman who takes an unexpected journey through France with her husband's associate.

Recognition

Roos received an Academy Award for Best Picture as a producer of Lost in Translation. He also received an Academy Award nomination for The Black Stallion.

Throughout his career, he was admired for his loyalty to filmmakers and his ability to identify promising actors and creative talent.
