Fumiyo Kohinata
Biography
Fumiyo Kohinata was born on 23 January 1954 in Mikasa, Hokkaido, Japan. He is a veteran Japanese actor whose career spans film, television, and theatre. He began his professional acting career in 1977 after joining the theatre company On Theater Jiyū Gekijō.
Kohinata gained wider recognition through television dramas such as Hero (2001), Jin, Doctors, Emergency Interrogation Room, and Sanada Maru. His film credits include Audition (1999), Always: Sunset on Third Street (2005), The Magic Hour (2008), Outrage (2010), Beyond Outrage (2012), and Fullmetal Alchemist (2017).
He also became internationally recognizable through Netflix's The Days (2023), a drama based on the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster. Kohinata portrayed Azuma, the Prime Minister, a character based on Japan's then-prime minister Naoto Kan.
With a career spanning more than four decades, Kohinata has established himself as one of Japan's most versatile character actors, appearing in comedies, dramas, crime films, historical productions, and television series. His more recent credits include Sunset Sunrise (2025), Emergency Interrogation Room: The Final (2025), and Kyojo: Reunion (2026).
