Gary Goetzman

Biography

Gary Michael Goetzman is an American film and television producer and actor, best known for his extensive work with filmmaker Jonathan Demme and actor-producer Tom Hanks. He was born on November 6, 1952, in Los Angeles, California.

Early Life and Career

Goetzman began his career as a child actor. He appeared in productions including McHale's Navy and the family comedy Yours, Mine and Ours (1968). He later moved increasingly toward production, music, and filmmaking behind the scenes.

His early production career included work with director Jonathan Demme. Goetzman produced the acclaimed Talking Heads concert film Stop Making Sense (1984) and subsequently became involved in several of Demme's films.

Producing Career

Goetzman's major producing credits include Miami Blues (1990), Amos & Andrew (1993), Devil in a Blue Dress (1995), That Thing You Do! (1996), Beloved (1998), My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002), The Polar Express (2004), Mamma Mia! (2008), Where the Wild Things Are (2009), Parkland (2013), A Hologram for the King (2016), Greyhound (2020), News of the World (2020), and A Man Called Otto (2022).

He served as executive producer on The Silence of the Lambs (1991), which won the Academy Award for Best Picture, and on Philadelphia (1993), beginning his long professional association with Tom Hanks.

Playtone and Tom Hanks

In 1998, Goetzman and Tom Hanks co-founded Playtone, a production company responsible for numerous successful films and television projects. Their collaboration extended to major productions including The Polar Express, Charlie Wilson's War, Mamma Mia!, Greyhound, and A Man Called Otto.

Goetzman has also been an executive producer on acclaimed television productions such as Band of Brothers, The Pacific, John Adams, Game Change, and Olive Kitteridge.
