Gavin Struthers

Biography

Gavin Struthers is an acclaimed freelance Director of Photography (DOP) working on projects worldwide. He was accepted into the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) in 2016 and the British Society of Cinematographers (BSC) in 2018, reflecting his distinguished career in visual storytelling.

 

 

Early Life and Education
Gavin discovered still photography at an early age, developing and printing his own work. He later studied Graphics, Fine Art, and Photography at the University for the Creative Arts (UCA) in the UK, before pursuing cinematography at the National Film & TV School, where he was mentored by Freddie Francis BSC.

 

 

Career
Struthers began his professional journey shooting documentaries, including his first Channel Four project in 1997. He later transitioned into drama and commercials, working across both film and high-definition formats. He was the DOP for the BBC’s first 3D HD broadcast, shot on Panavision’s Genesis Camera system.

 

 

His diverse credits include Outpost (Sony Pictures), Your Life in Their Hands (RTS Award), Shameless (BAFTA), Secret Diary of a Call Girl, Garrow’s Law, Downton Abbey (Golden Globe, Emmy, BAFTA), Endeavour, Shetland, Foyle’s War, Last Tango in Halifax (BAFTA), The Alienist (Paramount/TNT), and Nightflyers (NBC Universal/Netflix).
