George Bellows (1882–1925) was a prominent American painter and lithographer known for his powerful depictions of urban life, social realism, and vigorous scenes of boxing and city streets. Born in Columbus, Ohio, Bellows studied at the Art Students League in New York under William Merritt Chase, where he developed his skill in traditional academic techniques while cultivating a keen interest in contemporary life and modern subjects.

Bellows gained early recognition as a member of the Ashcan School, a group of artists dedicated to portraying the raw energy and challenges of American city life in the early 20th century.
