Biography

Gian-Carlo Coppola (September 17, 1963 – May 26, 1986) was an American film producer and the eldest son of legendary filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola and artist-filmmaker Eleanor Coppola. He was part of the prominent Coppola filmmaking family.

Early Life

Gian-Carlo Coppola was born on September 17, 1963, in Los Angeles, California. He grew up surrounded by filmmaking and was exposed to the film industry from an early age.

His siblings were filmmaker Sofia Coppola and filmmaker and producer Roman Coppola. His extended family also included actor Nicolas Cage and director Jason Schwartzman.

Film Career

Gian-Carlo became interested in filmmaking and began working behind the scenes. He served as a producer on Francis Ford Coppola's film The Outsiders (1983), based on S. E. Hinton's novel.

He also had an association with Rumble Fish (1983), another film directed by his father. These projects gave him early experience in film production and demonstrated his intention to build a career in the industry.

Family and Personal Life

Gian-Carlo was married to Jacqueline de la Fontaine, and they had a daughter, Gian-Carla "Gia" Coppola, who later became a filmmaker.

He was also close to his father and siblings and was expected to continue the family's filmmaking tradition.

Death

Gian-Carlo Coppola died on May 26, 1986, at the age of 22, following a tragic boating accident in Annapolis, Maryland. He was reportedly operating a speedboat when an accident occurred involving an explosion.

His death was a devastating loss for the Coppola family. His father later dedicated the film ** Gardens of Stone (1987)** in part to his memory.
