Biography

Giuseppe Rotunno was born on March 19, 1923, in Rome, Italy. Growing up in the heart of Italian culture and cinema, he developed an early fascination with visual storytelling. During World War II, he served in the Italian army and was later held as a prisoner of war. After the war, Rotunno pursued his interest in film and began working in the Italian film industry, starting at Cinecittà Studios in Rome.

 

He began his career as a camera assistant, where he gained hands-on experience with lighting, framing, and composition—skills that would later define his signature style.

 

 

Rise in Italian Cinema

Rotunno emerged during the golden age of Italian cinema, working alongside some of the most celebrated filmmakers of the era. His collaboration with director Federico Fellini proved especially significant. Rotunno served as cinematographer on several of Fellini’s landmark films, including:

Fellini Satyricon (1969)

Roma (1972)

Amarcord (1973)
