G. Sekaran Kalaipuli
Biography
Kalaipuli G. Sekaran (1951/1952 – 13 April 2025) was an Indian film distributor, producer, director and actor who worked primarily in Tamil cinema. Over a career spanning several decades, he worked in different areas of the film industry, including film financing, distribution, production, direction and acting.
Early Career
Sekaran began his career as a film financier and distributor. He later became a partner in Kalaipuli Films, along with S. Thanu and Soori. The company entered film production with the supernatural thriller Yaar? (1985), directed by Yaar Kannan. Sekaran also appeared in the film in a negative role.
Career as Director
Sekaran subsequently moved into filmmaking and directed several Tamil films. His directorial credits included Oorai Therunjukitten (1988), Kaaval Poonaigal (1989) and Ulavaali (1994). He later directed the thriller Kattuviriyan (2008), starring Malavika, for which he also composed the music.
In 2011, he became involved in the production of Kallaparundhu, although the film did not receive a theatrical release.
Acting Career
Sekaran also tried his hand at acting, taking on leading roles later in his career. He made his debut as a lead actor with Jameen Kottai (1995). He subsequently played the lead in Kudumba Sangili (1999).
Although acting was only one part of his career, these films marked his transition from working behind the scenes to appearing as a principal performer.
Work in Film Distribution
Distribution remained an important part of Sekaran's professional life. During the late 2000s, he served as chairman of the Distributors' Council, representing the interests and concerns of film distributors in the Tamil film industry. His experience in distribution and finance gave him an influential position within the industry.
Death
Kalaipuli G. Sekaran died in Chennai on 13 April 2025, aged 73. He left behind a career that encompassed several important aspects of Tamil cinema, from film distribution and production to direction and acting.
