Halyna Hutchins

Biography

Halyna Hutchins (April 10, 1979 – October 21, 2021) was a Ukrainian-American cinematographer known for her work in independent films. Born in Horodets, Ukrainian SSR, Soviet Union, she grew up on a Soviet military base in the Arctic and later moved to the United States to pursue a career in filmmaking.

Hutchins studied journalism at Kyiv National University and later earned a graduate degree in cinematography from the American Film Institute Conservatory in Los Angeles. She quickly established herself as a talented director of photography and was selected by American Cinematographer as a rising talent in the industry.

Her cinematography credits included films such as Archenemy (2020), starring Joe Manganiello; Blindfire (2020); The Mad Hatter (2021); and Rust (2024). She was known for creating visually distinctive images and for her work across independent dramas, thrillers, and Westerns.

While working as a cinematographer on Rust, Hutchins was fatally shot on October 21, 2021, during a rehearsal on the film's set in Santa Fe County, New Mexico. Actor and producer Alec Baldwin was handling a prop firearm when it discharged, killing Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza.

Her death led to widespread discussions and investigations concerning firearm safety, working conditions, and safety procedures on film sets. The incident also resulted in criminal and civil proceedings.

Halyna Hutchins was 42 years old when she died. She is remembered for her cinematography, her contributions to independent filmmaking, and as a prominent figure in discussions about safety in film production.
