Han Jin Won
Biography
Han Jin-won (born 1986) is a South Korean screenwriter and assistant director, best known for co-writing the critically acclaimed film Parasite (2019) alongside director Bong Joon-ho. Their collaboration earned them the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay at the 92nd Academy Awards in 2020, making them the first Asian writers to win in any screenwriting category at the Oscars.
Early Life and Education
Han pursued film studies at Yongin University, graduating in 2005. He began his career in the film industry working in various assistant roles, including as a property assistant on South Bound (2013), and in the production departments of films such as Dad for Rent (2014), Daughter (2014), Granny’s Got Talent (2015), Enemies In-Law (2015), and Pandora (2016).
Career and Breakthrough with Parasite
Han's collaboration with Bong Joon-ho began when he served as a second assistant director on Bong's film Okja (2017). Impressed by Han's work, Bong invited him to assist with research for a new project, which evolved into the screenplay for Parasite. Han conducted extensive field research, interviewing housekeepers, tutors, and chauffeurs, and visiting various neighborhoods in Seoul to provide authenticity to the story. His contributions were integral to the development of the screenplay, leading to his co-writer credit on the film.
Recent Work and Directorial Debut
Following the success of Parasite, Han continued to work in the film industry and is set to make his directorial debut with the upcoming K-drama Running Mate, scheduled for release on the South Korean streaming platform TVING.
