Harindranath Chattopadhyay
Biography
Harindranath Chattopadhyay (2 April 1898 – 23 June 1990) was an Indian poet, playwright, actor, composer and writer who worked in literature, theatre and cinema. He was the younger brother of poet and freedom fighter Sarojini Naidu and diplomat Virendranath Chattopadhyay.
Born in Hyderabad, he developed an interest in poetry and the performing arts from an early age. His literary work included poetry, plays, and songs, and he became known for his distinctive writing style and interest in Indian culture and social themes.
Chattopadhyay also had a notable career as a character actor, particularly in Hindi cinema. He appeared in films such as Bawarchi, Satyakam, Chhoti Si Baat, Mera Saaya, Amar Prem, Julie and Shatranj Ke Khilari. His unusual appearance, expressive acting, and versatility made him memorable even in supporting roles.
Beyond cinema, he was active in theatre and music and was respected for his contributions to Indian literature and the arts. He received recognition for his literary achievements and remained involved with creative work for much of his life.
Harindranath Chattopadhyay died on 23 June 1990 in Bombay (now Mumbai), Maharashtra, at the age of 92. He is remembered as a versatile cultural figure whose career extended across poetry, theatre, music and Indian cinema.
