Biography
Harmanpreet Kaur, born on March 8, 1989, in Moga, Punjab, is a prominent Indian cricketer who currently captains the Indian women's national team across all formats. An aggressive right-handed all-rounder, she is known for her powerful hitting and right-arm off-break bowling.
Kaur's cricketing journey began at a young age, inspired by Virender Sehwag. She trained at the Gian Jyoti School Academy and later moved to Mumbai in 2014, working for the Indian Railways.
She made her international debut in March 2009 in a Women's One Day International (WODI) against Pakistan. Her Women's Twenty20 International (WT20I) debut followed in June 2009 against England, and her Test debut was in August 2014 against England.
A significant moment in her career came during the 2017 ICC Women's Cricket World Cup semi-final against Australia, where she scored an unbeaten 171, which remains the highest individual score by an Indian woman in World Cup history. In November 2018, she became the first Indian woman to score a century in a WT20I.
Kaur has achieved several milestones, including being the first Indian cricketer, male or female, to sign with an overseas Twenty20 franchise, the Sydney Thunder in the Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) in 2016. She also captained India to victory in the Women's Twenty20 Asia Cup in 2012 and 2016. In 2019, she became the first Indian cricketer to play in 100 international Twenty20 matches.
More recently, she captained the Mumbai Indians to victory in the inaugural Women's Premier League (WPL) in 2023 and again in 2025. She was also a part of the Indian team that won a silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and a gold medal at the 2022 Asian Games. In December 2024, she became the second Indian woman to score 1000 or more ODI runs as captain.
Harmanpreet Kaur was honored with the Arjuna Award in 2017 and was named one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Year in 2023. Her explosive batting and leadership have made her a key figure in Indian women's cricket and an inspiration to many.
