Hayley Matthews

Biography

Hayley Matthews is a Barbadian sportswoman who has risen to prominence as a formidable all-rounder in women's international cricket. Known for her aggressive right-handed batting and effective right-arm off-break bowling, she has become a pivotal player for the West Indies and various T20 franchises worldwide.

Early Life and Sporting Beginnings:

Born on March 19, 1998, in Barbados and raised in Bridgetown, Hayley Matthews was introduced to cricket at a very young age by her father, Mike, who played for a leading local club, and her older brother, Wayne. Her natural talent was evident early on; she joined her primary school's boys' cricket team at age eight or nine and by 11, was captaining the team. This early exposure to playing against boys helped sharpen her skills, particularly in facing fast bowling and improving her fielding.

Beyond cricket, Matthews also excelled as a javelin thrower, representing Barbados in international track and field competitions, winning silver medals at the CARIFTA Games in 2013 and 2014, and a gold medal in 2015. While she pursued both sports, she ultimately chose to focus on cricket.

International Career and Rise to Leadership:

Matthews made her international debut for the West Indies at just 16 years old, playing her first Twenty20 International against New Zealand in September 2014. Her One Day International (ODI) debut followed a few months later, where she impressed with a score of 55 against Australia.

A defining moment in her career came in the 2016 ICC Women's World Twenty20 final, where her explosive 66 runs off 45 balls were instrumental in leading the West Indies to their maiden title victory.

Her consistent all-around performances earned her the captaincy of the West Indies women's cricket team in 2022, a testament to her leadership qualities and on-field impact.

Key Achievements and Domestic Cricket:

As an all-rounder, Matthews has achieved significant milestones:

  • ODI Cricket: She has scored over 2,900 runs, including multiple centuries and half-centuries, and taken over 120 wickets.
  • T20I Cricket: She has amassed over 2,800 runs, including three centuries and numerous half-centuries, and taken over 110 wickets. She was named ICC Women's T20I Cricketer of the Year in 2023.
  • She is one of only three women to score a century in all three international formats (Tests, ODIs, and T20Is).

Beyond international duties, Matthews is a highly sought-after player in T20 leagues globally. She has played for teams like the Hobart Hurricanes and Melbourne Renegades in the Women's Big Bash League (WBBL), Welsh Fire in The Hundred, and was a key player for Mumbai Indians, helping them clinch the inaugural Women's Premier League (WPL) title in 2023, where she was also awarded the Player of the Tournament and Purple Cap (most wickets).
