Biography

Henry Koster (May 1, 1905 – September 21, 1988) was a German-born American film director known for his work in romantic comedies, dramas, musicals, and family films. He directed many successful Hollywood productions, including The Bishop's Wife (1947), Harvey (1950), My Cousin Rachel (1952), and The Robe (1953).

Early Life

Henry Koster was born Hermann Kosterlitz on May 1, 1905, in Berlin, Germany. He developed an interest in storytelling and cinema at an early age and began writing screenplays in Germany during the silent film era.

He started directing films in Germany before moving to France and later escaping Nazi persecution. In 1936, he arrived in the United States and began a successful Hollywood career.

Koster became known for his warm storytelling style, strong character development, and ability to handle a wide range of genres. He worked with many leading Hollywood stars and became one of the most reliable directors of the studio era.

The Robe

Koster directed The Robe (1953), the first film released in the widescreen CinemaScope format. The biblical epic became a major box-office success and received several Academy Award nominations.

Koster received an Academy Award nomination for Best Director for The Bishop's Wife (1947). He was also honored for his contributions to American cinema.

Personal Life

Koster was married twice and had two children. His second wife was actress Peggy Moran.
