Biography
Henry Mancini was a legendary American composer, known for his unforgettable film and television scores. Born Enrico Nicola Mancini to Italian immigrant parents, he grew up in the steel town of Aliquippa, Pennsylvania. He showed an early aptitude for music, studying flute and piano before enrolling at the Juilliard School of Music in New York. His education was interrupted by World War II, during which he served in the U.S. Army and worked with Glenn Miller’s Army Air Forces Band.
Career
After the war, Mancini began working at Universal Pictures in the 1950s, where he composed scores for B-movies and honed his craft. His breakthrough came in 1958 with the TV series Peter Gunn, which featured a jazzy, stylish score that became an instant classic and earned him an Emmy and two Grammy Awards.
