Hideo Nakata

Biography

Hideo Nakata was born on 19 July 1961 in Okayama, Japan. He is a Japanese filmmaker, director, writer, and producer who is widely regarded as one of the leading figures of the J-horror genre. After graduating from the University of Tokyo, he joined Nikkatsu Studios in 1985 and worked as an assistant director before beginning his directing career.

Nakata gained international recognition with Ring (Ringu, 1998), a supernatural horror film based on Kōji Suzuki's novel. The film became a major success and helped establish modern Japanese horror internationally. He followed it with Ring 2 (1999) and Dark Water (2002), both of which became influential works in the genre.

In 2005, Nakata made his English-language directing debut with The Ring Two, the Hollywood sequel to the American remake of The Ring. He later directed films including Death Note: L Change the World, Chatroom, Stolen Identity, Sadako, The Forbidden Play, and Stigmatized Properties: Possession.

Nakata also directed two episodes of Netflix's The Days (2023), alongside Masaki Nishiura. The series dramatizes the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster following the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

Through his distinctive approach to supernatural horror, psychological suspense, and human drama, Nakata has become one of the most influential directors associated with Japanese horror cinema.
