His father, Anil Pal, is a software engineer, and his mother, Nuzhat Khan, is a psychologist. Imran has strong ties to the Hindi film industry through his maternal side: he is the grandson of director-producer Nasir Hussain, the nephew of director-producer Mansoor Khan, and the cousin of superstar Aamir Khan.
His parents divorced when he was young, and he moved to Mumbai with his mother, taking on the name Imran Khan. He received his schooling in Mumbai and Ooty before moving to California with his father and attending Fremont High School.
