Jack Webb was an American actor, producer, director, and screenwriter best known for creating and starring as Sergeant Joe Friday in the iconic police procedural series Dragnet.
He was born April 2, 1920, in Santa Monica, California. Webb began his entertainment career in radio before moving into film and television. His breakthrough came with Dragnet, which began as a radio series in 1949 and was later adapted into a highly successful television series.
Webb appeared in films including The Men (1950), Sunset Boulevard (1950), Pete Kelly's Blues (1955), and -30- (1959). He also directed several films, including Pete Kelly's Blues and -30-.
Beyond acting, Webb was a major figure in television production. He founded Mark VII Limited, producing Dragnet and other television series such as Adam-12 and Emergency!
