Biography

Jaidev (born Jaidev Verma; 3 August 1918 – 6 January 1987) was one of India's most respected film music composers. Renowned for his melodious, poetic, and classically inspired compositions, he created some of the finest soundtracks in Hindi cinema. Although he was not as commercially prolific as many of his contemporaries, his music earned widespread critical acclaim and left a lasting influence on Indian film music. He remains the only music director to have won the National Film Award for Best Music Direction three times.

Early Life

Jaidev Verma was born on 3 August 1918 in Nairobi, Kenya, where his father worked before the family returned to India. He was raised in Ludhiana, Punjab, and developed a passion for music from an early age. As a teenager, he moved to Bombay (now Mumbai) hoping to become an actor and appeared in several films as a child artist. However, family responsibilities forced him to return home for a time.

After fulfilling his family obligations, Jaidev resumed his musical training under renowned musicians, including Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. This classical foundation became the hallmark of his later work as a film composer.

Career

Jaidev began his professional career as an assistant to Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and later worked with the Navketan banner. He made his independent mark as a music director during the late 1950s and early 1960s.

His breakthrough came with Hum Dono (1961), whose memorable songs became enduring classics of Hindi cinema. Over the years, he composed music for several critically acclaimed films, including Mujhe Jeene Do (1963), Reshma Aur Shera (1971), Prem Parbat (1973), Gharaonda (1977), Gaman (1978), and Ankahee (1985). His compositions were known for their emotional depth, sophisticated orchestration, and seamless blend of Indian classical and folk traditions.

Jaidev frequently collaborated with celebrated lyricists such as Sahir Ludhianvi and poets including Kaifi Azmi. Many of his songs were sung by legendary playback singers including Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi, Manna Dey, Asha Bhosle, Bhupinder Singh, and Hariharan.

Musical Style

Unlike many mainstream composers of his era, Jaidev focused on melody and lyrical expression rather than commercial trends. His music often featured classical ragas, folk influences, and subtle orchestration, creating songs of remarkable beauty and emotional resonance. His work earned admiration from musicians, critics, and audiences alike for its artistic quality.
