James Bridges was an American screenwriter, director, and producer known for films exploring social issues, personal relationships, and the complexities of American life.
He was born on February 3, 1936, in Atlanta, Georgia. Bridges began his career writing for television before moving into feature films as a screenwriter and director.
He wrote the screenplay for The Appaloosa (1966) and later directed films including The Baby Maker (1970), The Paper Chase (1973), September 30, 1955 (1977), Mike's Murder (1984), and Bright Lights, Big City (1988). The Paper Chase was particularly successful and earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Bridges was also involved in several major film projects as a screenwriter, including The China Syndrome (1979) and Urban Cowboy (1980).
