James Coburn was an American actor known for his charismatic screen presence and performances in action films, Westerns, thrillers, and dramas.
He was born James Harrison Coburn III on August 31, 1928, in Laurel, Nebraska. He began his acting career with television appearances before gaining recognition in Hollywood during the 1960s.
Coburn became famous for films such as The Magnificent Seven (1960), The Great Escape (1963), Charade (1963), Major Dundee (1965), Our Man Flint (1966), In Like Flint (1967), and Candy (1968). He also appeared in Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid (1973) and Cross of Iron (1977).
He won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance as Glen Whitehouse in Affliction (1997). His later notable appearances included Payback (1999) and The Nutty Professor (1996).
James Coburn died on November 18, 2002, in Beverly Hills, California, at the age of 74. He is remembered as one of Hollywood's distinctive character actors and action stars.
