Born Simon Richard D'Arcy in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, on August 24, 1975, he was raised in London. After graduating from the prestigious Christ's Hospital school, he spent a year working in Australia before returning to study acting at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA), graduating in 1995.
D'Arcy began his career in the mid-1990s with appearances in British television series like Silent Witness and period miniseries such as The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling. Early film recognition came with roles in the World War I drama The Trench (1999) and the adventure epic Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003), where he played the young First Lieutenant Tom Pullings.
