James Ponsoldt

Biography

James Ponsoldt is an American film director, screenwriter, and producer, born on September 5, 1978, in Athens, Georgia. He studied at Yale University before earning an MFA in directing from Columbia University. He began his filmmaking career with short films before moving into feature filmmaking.

Ponsoldt made his feature directorial debut with Off the Black (2006), followed by Smashed (2012), a drama exploring alcoholism and its impact on a young married couple. He gained widespread critical recognition with The Spectacular Now (2013), starring Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley. The film premiered at Sundance and won the festival's Special Jury Award for Acting.

He later directed The End of the Tour (2015), a biographical drama about writer David Foster Wallace, and The Circle (2017), starring Emma Watson and Tom Hanks. His other feature projects include Summering (2022).

Ponsoldt has also built an extensive television career. He directed episodes of series including Parenthood, Shameless, Master of None, and Sorry for Your Loss. He directed and executive produced episodes of Daisy Jones & The Six (2023), serving as an executive producer on the acclaimed miniseries.

He is also an executive producer on the Apple TV+ comedy series Shrinking, for which he has received multiple Primetime Emmy nominations as part of the producing team.

Through his work in independent cinema and television, James Ponsoldt has become known for character-driven stories that explore relationships, addiction, youth, identity, and emotional struggles.
