Biography

Jamie N. Commons (born James Nicholas Commons on 22 October 1988) is a British singer and songwriter, known for his soulful, blues-infused rock sound and dynamic collaborations. Based in New Cross, London, he has gained recognition both as a solo artist and as a co-writer for other musicians.

Early Life and Education

Commons was born in Bristol, England, and spent part of his childhood in Chicago, Illinois, where he developed a love for American blues, folk, and swamp rock music, inspired by artists like The Allman Brothers Band. He returned to the English West Country at age 16 and moved to London at 18 to study classical music at Goldsmiths College, where he studied alongside contemporaries including James Blake and Katy B.

Career

Commons’ career began to gain international attention with the release of his second EP, Rumble and Sway (2013), produced by Alex da Kid and released through KIDinaKORNER/Interscope. The title track appeared in trailers for Hail, Caesar!, Teen Wolf, and Suits, and was used in commercials for Levi’s and Butterfinger. That same year, he opened for Bruce Springsteen in Nijmegen.

He has collaborated with high-profile artists, including Eminem (The Marshall Mathers LP 2), X Ambassadors (Jungle), and Big K.R.I.T. (Saturdays = Celebration), with his songs frequently featured in films, trailers, TV shows, and commercials such as Pitch Perfect 2, Hercules, Project Almanac, and Beats by Dre campaigns. His track “Not Gonna Break Me” was used in the BBC’s trailer for the 2016 Summer Olympics, and he wrote and produced the title track for the film Skyscraper.

In 2018, Commons launched “The Fever Dreams,” a series of singles leading up to his debut studio album. He has also co-written hit songs for other artists, including Lewis Capaldi’s chart-topping single “Hold Me While You Wait” and Conrad Sewell’s “Testify,” both of which achieved commercial success internationally.
