Biography

Jayant (born Zakaria Khan; 15 October 1915 – 2 June 1975) was a prominent Indian actor known for his commanding screen presence, deep voice, and imposing personality. A leading actor during the 1930s and 1940s, he later became one of Hindi cinema's most respected character actors and villains. He appeared in numerous successful films and shared the screen with legendary stars such as Dilip Kumar, Madhubala, and Kishore Kumar. He was the father of actors Amjad Khan and Imtiaz Khan.

Early Life

Jayant was born as Zakaria Khan on 15 October 1915 in Nodeh Payan (Nawan Kalli), Peshawar, North-West Frontier Province, British India (now in Pakistan). He belonged to a Pashtun family and completed only his elementary education. Before entering the film industry, he served as a police officer in Alwar, Rajasthan.

Career

Jayant began his acting career with Vijay Bhatt's first Gujarati film, Sansaar Leela (1933). It was Bhatt who gave him the screen name Jayant, which he used throughout his film career.

During the 1930s, Jayant established himself as a leading man with starring roles in films such as Bombay Mail (1935), Challenge (1936), His Highness (1937), and State Express (1938). His tall stature, powerful voice, and dignified personality made him a popular choice for heroic roles.

As Hindi cinema evolved, Jayant successfully transitioned into character roles, portraying kings, noblemen, military officers, and powerful antagonists. His memorable performances in films such as Amar, Mem Didi, and Nazneen earned him widespread recognition. Throughout his career, he worked alongside many of the biggest stars of Indian cinema, including Dilip Kumar, Madhubala, and Kishore Kumar.

Legacy

Jayant is remembered as one of the distinguished character actors of classic Hindi cinema. His versatility and authoritative screen presence left a lasting impression on audiences. His legacy continued through his sons, Amjad Khan, who became one of Indian cinema's greatest villains with his iconic role as Gabbar Singh in Sholay, and Imtiaz Khan, who also pursued a successful acting career.

Jayant passed away on 2 June 1975 at the age of 59, leaving behind a significant contribution to Indian cinema spanning more than four decades.
