Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960–1988) was an American artist and cultural icon whose work reshaped the contemporary art world in the late 20th century. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Basquiat showed early artistic talent, drawing inspiration from street culture, music, and his multicultural heritage, including Haitian and Puerto Rican roots. He initially gained attention as part of the graffiti duo SAMO, creating cryptic, poetic messages on the walls of Lower Manhattan in the late 1970s.

Basquiat’s career in the 1980s was meteoric.
