The screenplay had a long development period. Maguire developed the project from an idea brought to him by producer Jeff Apple, and after years of difficulty, the screenplay eventually attracted major Hollywood interest. The completed film became a major success and established Maguire as a prominent screenwriter.
His work on In the Line of Fire earned him a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. The film remains the work for which he is most widely recognized.
Later Work
Following the success of In the Line of Fire, Maguire continued working on feature-film screenplays. He was involved with Timeline (2003), a science-fiction adventure based on Michael Crichton's novel, receiving a screenplay credit.
He later wrote Gridiron Gang (2006), a sports drama directed by Phil Joanou and starring Dwayne Johnson. The film was inspired by the real-life story of the Kilpatrick Mustangs, a football team formed at a juvenile detention facility. Maguire's screenplay focuses on how football can provide young offenders with discipline, teamwork, confidence, and a sense of responsibility.
