Jeremy Irons

Biography

Jeremy Irons is an Academy Award-winning English film, television, and stage actor. He started on stage in the late 1960s, working with the renowned Bristol Old Vic Theatre in Shakespearean plays like The Winter`s Tale, Macbeth, and As You Like It before making his television debut in the 1971 series The Rivals of Sherlock Holmes. 

 

Subsequently, the actor appeared in shows like The Pallisers, Notorious Woman, and Churchill`s People before making his feature film debut in the biographical drama Nijinsky (1980).

In 1981, Irons landed his first starring role in the romantic drama The French Lieutenant`s Woman, for which he received a BAFTA Award nomination for Best Actor. 

 

Following roles in acclaimed movies like Moonlighting (1982), The Mission (1986), and Dead Ringers (1988), he played British socialite and accused murderer Claus von Bulow in the biographical drama Reversal of Fortune (1990), a performance which earned him an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for Best Actor that year. 

 

The mystery thriller Kafka (1991), the drama film Waterland (1992), the action film Die Hard: With a Vengeance (1995), Lolita (1997), and The Man in the Iron Mask (1998) are some of the Irons other notable film credits in the 1990s.

He has also appeared in several television shows and is a two-time Primetime Emmy Award winner - Outstanding Supporting Actor for the historical drama Elizabeth I and Outstanding Narrator for the documentary Big Cat Week. Other notable television credits include Love for Lydia, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and The Borgias. 

 

In 2016, Irons debuted in the DC Extended Universe by essaying the role of Alfred Pennyworth in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), a role he has since reprised in Justice League (2017). 

 

Other significant film credits in recent times include Margin Call (2011), High-Rise (2015), The Man Who Knew Infinity (2015), Their Finest (2016), Justice League (2017), and Red Sparrow (2018).
