Jeremy McWilliams

Biography

Jeremy McWilliams, born in Northern Ireland, is a professional motorcycle racer and test rider known for his versatility and longevity in Grand Prix competition. Despite starting competitive racing relatively late at the age of 24, McWilliams quickly rose through the ranks, making his Grand Prix debut in 1993 at the Australian GP aboard a 500cc machine.

Racing Career

Over the next eight years, McWilliams alternated between the 250cc and 500cc classes, establishing himself as a skilled and adaptable rider. In 2002, he joined the Proton KR MotoGP team for two seasons and later rode for Aprilia in 2004. Following Aprilia’s withdrawal in 2005, he briefly returned to Proton KR before signing with the Ilmor team for the 2007 season.

Unfortunately, a severe crash during team testing at the end of 2006 resulted in the loss of two fingers and a broken femur, causing him to miss the opening round in Qatar, which became the Ilmor team’s only race.

McWilliams’ career highlights include being the last British rider to achieve a MotoGP podium finish in 2000, a feat not repeated by a British rider until Cal Crutchlow in 2012.

Legacy

Renowned for his determination, skill, and resilience, Jeremy McWilliams has remained a respected figure in motorcycle racing, continuing to contribute to the sport as a test rider for KTM. His career demonstrates the rewards of perseverance and adaptability in one of motorsport’s most demanding arenas.
