Jiyen Krishnakumar

Biography

Jiyen Krishnakumar is an Indian film director and writer associated primarily with Malayalam and Tamil cinema. Born on 1 May 1978 in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, he has built a career around feature films exploring crime, action, social conflict, and suspense. He is also known as G. N. Krishnakumar.

Early Life and Career

Krishnakumar entered the film industry as a filmmaker and made his directorial debut with the Malayalam film College Days in 2010. The film, featuring Indrajith Sukumaran in a leading role, established him as a director interested in youth-oriented drama and thriller elements. He also received a writing credit for the film.

He followed this with Kaanchi in 2013, again working with Indrajith Sukumaran. The film furthered his experience in Malayalam feature filmmaking and demonstrated his interest in stories driven by character and conflict.

Tiyaan

One of the major films in Krishnakumar's Malayalam career was Tiyaan, released in 2017. Written by Murali Gopy, the socio-political action thriller starred Prithviraj Sukumaran and Indrajith Sukumaran in prominent roles. The film dealt with political, social, and ideological conflicts and represented a larger-scale production in Krishnakumar's career.

Tiyaan brought together an ensemble cast and a technically ambitious production team, with music by Gopi Sundar and cinematography by Satheesh Kurup. The film further established Krishnakumar as a director comfortable with action-oriented and socially charged material.

Entry into Tamil Cinema

Krishnakumar made his Tamil directorial debut with Run Baby Run, released in 2023. He also wrote the screenplay for the film. The action thriller starred RJ Balaji, Aishwarya Rajesh and Isha Talwar.

The story follows Sathya, a carefree man who unexpectedly becomes involved in a complicated murder investigation and finds himself racing against time. The film marked a change of direction for RJ Balaji, who took on a more serious thriller-oriented role.

Run Baby Run was an important step in Krishnakumar's career because it allowed him to work outside Malayalam cinema and establish himself in the Tamil film industry as both a director and writer.
