Joaquim de Almeida

Biography

Joaquim de Almeida is a Portuguese-American actor known for his extensive work in Portuguese, European, and American cinema and television. He has appeared in more than 90 films and television productions and is particularly recognized for Clear and Present Danger, Desperado, Behind Enemy Lines, 24, Fast Five, and Fast X.

Early Life

Joaquim António Portugal Baptista de Almeida was born on March 15, 1957, in Lisbon, Portugal. He was the sixth of eight children in a family whose parents were pharmacists. He studied theatre at the Lisbon Conservatory before leaving Portugal after the 1974 democratic revolution temporarily disrupted the school.

He spent a year in Vienna before moving to New York City in 1976. There, he studied acting with teachers including Lee Strasberg, Nicholas Ray, and Stella Adler while supporting himself through various jobs.

Acting Career

Almeida began appearing in small television and theatre roles before making his film debut in The Soldier (1981). He followed it with a significant role in The Honorary Consul (1983), alongside Richard Gere, Michael Caine, and Bob Hoskins.

His international breakthrough came with Good Morning, Babylon (1987), directed by Paolo and Vittorio Taviani. The film's success helped establish him as an international actor.

Hollywood Career

Almeida became widely recognized by American audiences in the 1990s. He played Félix Cortez in Clear and Present Danger (1994), starring Harrison Ford, and Bucho in Robert Rodriguez's Desperado (1995). These roles established his reputation for playing powerful and intimidating characters.

He subsequently appeared in films including Behind Enemy Lines (2001), The Hitman's Bodyguard (2017), and Fast Five (2011).

24

One of his most prominent television roles was Ramon Salazar in the third season of the thriller series 24 (2003–2004). His performance as the dangerous Mexican drug lord brought him further international recognition.

Fast & Furious

Almeida joined the Fast & Furious franchise as Hernan Reyes, the Brazilian crime lord and antagonist of Fast Five (2011). He later reprised the character in Fast X (2023).

Multilingual Career

A major advantage throughout Almeida's international career has been his ability to work in several languages. He speaks Portuguese, English, French, Italian, Spanish, and German fluently, allowing him to appear in productions from different countries and cinematic traditions.
