Biography

Joe Seo, born Joseph Seo on July 31, 1980, in San Francisco, California, is an American actor of Korean heritage. He was raised in Los Angeles and developed an interest in acting during his school years. He later attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he earned a bachelor's degree in anthropology.

Early Life and Career

Seo began pursuing acting while still in high school. His early screen work included appearances in films such as Gridiron Gang (2006) and Freedom Writers (2007). He subsequently built his résumé through feature films, short films, television projects, and other productions in both the United States and South Korea.

His early credits also included Out of the Shadows, The Road to Hell, and the Korean sports film Take Off. These projects allowed him to gain experience across different genres and production environments.

Breakthrough with Spa Night

A major turning point in Joe Seo's career came with the 2016 independent drama Spa Night, directed by Andrew Ahn. Seo played David Cho, a young Korean-American man struggling with his identity while dealing with family expectations and cultural pressures.

His performance received significant recognition. At the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, Seo won the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Breakthrough Performance. He also received the Grand Jury Award for Outstanding Performance at L.A. Outfest.

The role established Seo as a performer capable of handling emotionally complex characters and became one of the most important performances of his career.

Success with Cobra Kai

Joe Seo became widely recognized internationally for playing Kyler Park in the television series Cobra Kai. The series continues the story of the Karate Kid universe and features characters from the original films alongside a new generation.

Seo's Kyler is introduced as a high-school student and antagonist whose character develops throughout the series. Seo appeared in multiple seasons of the show, with his credited run spanning 2018–2024.

The role brought him a much larger television audience and became his most recognizable screen character.
