Biography
John Alton was an American cinematographer renowned for his striking use of light and shadow, particularly in film noir and crime films.
He was born Johann Altmann on October 5, 1901, in Sopron, Hungary. After emigrating to the United States, he began working in Hollywood's camera departments and eventually became one of the most influential cinematographers of the 1940s and 1950s.
Alton's notable cinematography credits include T-Men (1947), He Walked by Night (1948), The Amazing Mr. X (1948), The Black Book (1949), The Set-Up (1949), Raw Deal (1948), and The Teahouse of the August Moon (1956).
He was particularly celebrated for his work with director Anthony Mann, with whom he collaborated on several landmark films. His distinctive low-key lighting, deep shadows, unusual camera angles, and dramatic compositions helped define the visual language of film noir.
Alton won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography for An American in Paris (1951), sharing the award with Alfred Gilks.
He retired from cinematography in the late 1960s and largely withdrew from public life. John Alton died on June 2, 1996, in Santa Monica, California, at the age of 94.
