John Henry Twachtman

Biography

John Henry Twachtman was an American painter best known for his Impressionist landscape paintings. He was recognised for his delicate brushwork, subtle colours and poetic depictions of nature. He was also a founding member of the group known as the Ten American Painters.

Born on August 4, 1853, in Cincinnati, Ohio, Twachtman began studying art at the Ohio Mechanics Institute and later attended the McMicken School of Design. He studied under American painter Frank Duveneck, who encouraged him to continue his artistic education in Europe. In 1875, he travelled to Munich, Germany, where he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. He later visited Venice and moved to Paris in 1883 to study at the Académie Julian.

During his European travels, Twachtman developed an interest in Impressionism, Japanese prints and the works of James McNeill Whistler. After returning to the United States, he settled in Greenwich, Connecticut, around 1889. The surrounding countryside became a major source of inspiration for his paintings, particularly his peaceful winter landscapes.

Some of his best-known paintings include Arques-la-Bataille (1885), Winter Harmony (c. 1890–1900), The White Bridge (c. 1895), Horseneck Brook (c. 1890s) and The Waterfall (c. 1889–90).
