John Logan

Biography

John Logan was a playwright in Chicago for ten years before writing, on spec, his first screenplay, "Any Given Sunday." He won the 2010 Tony, Drama Desk, Drama League, and Outer Critics Circle awards for his play RED, which premiered at the Donmar Warehouse in London and the Golden Theatre on Broadway.

Says his favorite original series episode is Balance of Terror (1966), which introduced the Romulans to the audience, and has, thus, made the tenth "Star Trek" movie, Star Trek: Nemesis (2002), about the Romulans.

Has written two movies that were directed by Martin Scorsese.

His play, "Never the Sinner", at the Stormfield Theatre in Chicago, Illinois was awarded the 1986 Joseph Jefferson Award Citation for New Work.

Met Brent Spiner (Lt. Comdr. Data on Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987)) during one of Mr. Spiner's performances of "1776" on Broadway and they, subsequently, became friends.

A huge fan of Citizen Kane (1941) and Orson Welles, Logan lobbied hard for the job of writing RKO 281 (1999), doing 6-months' worth of research before meeting with Ridley Scott to ask for the job.

Brent Spiner approached Star Trek's head honcho, Rick Berman, about having John Logan pen the 10th Star Trek movie, Star Trek: Nemesis (2002). He agreed.

Irish-American. His parents immigrated to the United States from Northern Ireland.

He has said that his favorite characters in Penny Dreadful are Vanessa Ives and The Creature/Caliban/John Clare. He liked Them so much that he wrote an episode, "A Blade Of Glass'', centered around just the two of Them.

Graduated from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois in 1983.

His play, "Hauptmann", was awarded the 1987 Joseph Jefferson Award Citation for Play Production at the Stormfield Theatre in Chicago, Illinois.

He was nominated for a 1989 Joseph Jefferson Award for Actor in a Principal Role in a Play for "Music from a Locked Room", at the Victory Gardens Theater in Chicago, Illinois.

Denis O'Hare, a close friend of Logan's from Northwestern University, originated the role of "Nathan Leopold" in Logan's play, "Never the Sinner", and the role of "Bruno Hauptmann" in Logan's play, "Hauptmann".

He was awarded the 1987 Joseph Jefferson Award Citation for New Work for "Hauptmann", at the Stormfield Theatre in Chicago, Illinois.
